Students at Cameron Heights Collegiate in Kitchener say the temperature inside the school is hot, humid, and hard to handle. In some classrooms, they say the mercury is has reached the 30 degree mark.

“It’s unbearable…try and work and focus and write tests and do assignments in those conditions” says student Peter Wyminga.

Right around the same time that temperatures started to climb the school’s air conditioning unit never turned on.

Student Amir Susiwala says, “I know one teacher complained it was 87 degrees Fahrenheit in one of the classrooms which is extremely bad there is no way you can work efficiently and effectively in that type of environment.”

School officials brought in fans to help cool off the classrooms, but students say with no windows the fans only pushed the hot air around.

Some teachers have allowed their classes to go outside, in order to deal with the conditions.

Student Milos Ziroje says, “It’s unbearable I honestly think it’s better to stay at home because when you are at the school you almost can’t stay conscious.”

Frustrated, students say they have started an online petition, demanding the AC be fixed as soon as possible.

However, not all of the students think the temperature inside the school is a big enough issue, to warrant a petition.

“Other schools like Galt and Preston they don’t have air conditioning to begin with so I think the students at our school are going a little over board with the petition” says student Megha Lad.

The Waterloo Region District School Board says parts for the school’s aging air conditioning unit are manufactured out of province, and are being shipped to Ontario.

Superintendent of business services, Matt Gerard says because of its size and the number of students that attend Cameron heights colligate, the school is extremely difficult to cool off without AC.

“Not every school has AC...Some of our smaller schools are much smaller then Cameron perhaps not as many floors... So it’s a different situation to cool some of our smaller schools” says Gerard.

Officials are hoping to have the unit fixed this week.

Broken AC has forced Cameron Heights students out of the classroom.
